Nicola A. Hanania, MD, MS, is a professor of medicine in the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and director of the Airways Clinical Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, TX. He also serves as the clinical sciences representative on the Faculty Senate at BCM. Finally, Dr Hanania is chief of the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Ben Taub Hospital.


He completed his medical training at The University of Jordan in Amman, followed by a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. He subsequently completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at BCM, where he later earned a master’s degree in clinical investigation.


Dr Hanania is fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), the European Respiratory Society, and the American Thoracic Society. He has received multiple awards and honors, including the BCM Master Clinician Award for Excellence in Patient Care, the ACCP Humanitarian Award, the BCM Fulbright & Jaworski LLP Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching and Evaluation, and the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Department of Medicine at BCM. He has also been named the ACCP Distinguished Scholar in Respiratory Health and the ACCP Distinguished CHEST Educator. He is editor in chief of Respiratory Medicine and associate editor of Lung. He serves on the editorial boards of Chest and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation.


Dr Hanania’s research interests focus on the pharmacology and management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He has published more than 320 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, editorials, and reviews on these topics. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Lung Association, and industry and focuses on clinical trials investigating novel treatments. He is principal investigator (PI) for the American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Center and the COPDGene study at BCM, as well as PI or co-PI for several clinical trials in asthma and COPD. Dr Hanania has been invited to lecture at numerous local, regional, national, and international meetings.
