Surya P. Bhatt, MD, is a professor of medicine and an endowed professor of airways disease in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is also director of the UAB Center for Lung Analytics and Imaging Research and medical director of the UAB Pulmonary Function and Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
Dr Bhatt’s primary clinical and research interests are focused on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He leads 2 research programs: lung imaging and COPD clinical trials. His research is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute with R and U grants. He has developed several new imaging biomarkers for COPD, as well as new spirometric methods to detect airflow obstruction. Dr Bhatt is the overall principal investigator of the multicenter TeleCOPD study, which is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He has more than 285 peer-reviewed publications, including in high-impact journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
