Charles A. Leath 3rd, MD, MSPH, FACS, FACOG, is the Ellen Gregg Shook Culverhouse Chair in Gynecologic Oncology and division director at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he completed both his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology. He is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology and holds a master of science in public health degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.
Dr Leath is actively involved in clinical research on the management of endometrial, cervical, and ovarian cancers, as well as clinical trials for all aspects of gynecologic cancer. He is chair of the NRG Oncology Cervix/Vulvar Cancer Subcommittee and is the national principal investigator for NRG-GY006 evaluating the addition of triapine to standard chemoradiation for locally advanced cervical cancer.
He is also the institutional principal investigator for the Lead Academic Participating Site (LAPS) grant as part of the National Cancer Institute’s National Clinical Trial Network, chair of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, and an investigator on the combined Johns Hopkins University-The University of Alabama at Birmingham Cervical Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE). Dr Leath is an author or a coauthor of more than 185 peer-reviewed publications.
