Anthony J. Schaeffer, MD, is a professor in the Department of Urology and holds the Herman L. Kretschmer Professorship in Urology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago IL, which is consistently ranked as one of the top urology departments in the country and is the leading recipient of National Institutes of Health funding for urology.


Dr Schaeffer received his undergraduate training at the College of Holy Cross. After graduating with honors from Northwestern University School of Medicine, he completed his general surgery training at Northwestern and his urology residency at Stanford University. He joined the faculty of the Northwestern Department of Urology in 1976.


He is a prominent urologist who has served as a key contributor to multiple Infectious Diseases Society of America clinical practice guidelines on urinary tract infections. He is currently the coinvestigator for numerous National Institutes of Health studies. His major professional interests are focused on the study and management of urinary tract infections and chronic pelvic pain. Dr Schaeffer has authored or coauthored more than 443 publications and is an active member of numerous professional medical societies.


He organized the Complicated UTI Clinic, a multidisciplinary program that involves urology, infectious disease, and pharmacology experts, at Northwestern. Dr Schaeffer assumed the position of chair of the Northwestern Department of Urology in 1990 and stepped down in 2015. He maintains clinical practice and an active research program.


In 2004, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Urological Association. In 1996, he received the MERIT award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. In 2014, Dr Schaeffer received honorary membership from the American Urological Association. Finally, in 2014, he was awarded the Keyes Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of urology.
