Caroline R. Baumal, MD, FASRS, is a practicing retinal surgeon as owner of Retina Specialists of Boston & Wellesley and staff physician at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, part of Mass General Brigham.


Dr Baumal completed her undergraduate studies at McGill University, her medical degree and ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, and fellowships in medical retina at the New England Eye Center and vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital.


She is a board-certified vitreoretinal surgeon and a professor of ophthalmology whose career has centered on the clinical care, teaching, and research of retinal disease. Dr Baumal spent the majority of her academic career at Tufts Medical Center and the New England Eye Center, where she served on the faculty from 1998 to 2025, including as a professor of ophthalmology, director of the Ophthalmology Residency Program, director of the Retinopathy of Prematurity Service, and codirector of the Retina Service and Medical Retina Fellowship. Over her career, she has trained and mentored more than 65 vitreoretinal fellows.


Dr Baumal’s research interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, complex retinal detachment repair, and optical coherence tomography and other retinal imaging. She has served as principal investigator or co-investigator for more than 40 major clinical trials and contributed to the clinical development of pegcetacoplan for geographic atrophy. Dr Baumal has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and more than 35 book chapters. She also edited the textbook Current Management of Diabetic Retinopathy.


She is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, The Retina Society, The Macula Society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Her contributions to the field have been recognized with the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award, an induction into the American Society of Retina Specialists Retina Hall of Fame, and the J. Donald Gass Beacon of Sight Award, among other honors.
