Keith Kaye, MD, MPH

Keith Kaye, MD, MPH, is chief of the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he is also executive vice chair of and a professor in the Department of Medicine.

Dr Kaye received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; completed his internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA; and earned a master in public health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health (currently known as the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health), also in Boston.

He has devoted his career to the prevention and effective management of health care–associated infections (HAIs). In addition to serving in a variety of quality improvement and administrative roles in infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and quality and patient safety, Dr Kaye has served on national and international clinical guideline committees. Moreover, he is an internationally recognized expert in health care epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance and has been invited to speak on these topics at venues throughout the world. He is also committed to teaching and training, and he has mentored more than 100 faculty members, trainees, and students in career development and research.

Dr Kaye’s research interests include the prevention and treatment of antimicrobial-resistant organisms, the prevention of HAIs, and innovative approaches to antimicrobial stewardship. He has a long and productive track record of federal funding for research (including for innovative clinical trials) pertaining to the management of HAIs and multidrug-resistant organisms, including Acinetobacter baumannii, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Dr Kaye has published more than 450 peer-reviewed articles and has authored more than 20 book chapters. He is a past president of The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
