Pranita D. Tamma, MD, MHS

Pranita D. Tamma, MD, MHS, is a professor of pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Tamma completed an internship in pediatrics, a residency in pediatrics, and a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases, all at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Her research centers on elucidating the mechanisms underlying antimicrobial resistance in gram-negative organisms, advancing laboratory methodologies to improve the detection of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, and optimizing therapeutic strategies to ensure that critically ill patients who are at risk for antimicrobial-resistant infections receive early effective therapy. She is currently principal investigator for 2 federally funded clinical trials addressing these critical challenges.

In addition to her research, Dr Tamma is deeply committed to mentorship and to training the next generation of clinician-scientists to confront the growing international threat of antimicrobial resistance. Moreover, she serves as an editor for Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and is 1 of 12 international voting members of the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee, where she contributes to the development of global standards for antibiotic breakpoints and both phenotypic and genotypic methods for detecting antimicrobial resistance. She is also the lead author of the Infectious Diseases Society of America antimicrobial resistance treatment guidance.
