Julie Kanter, MD, is associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, director of the Adult Sickle Cell Disease Program, and codirector of the Lifespan Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. 

Dr Kanter is a lifespan hematologist specializing in sickle cell disease (SCD). Her research area is broad and includes access to care, implementation and dissemination of guideline-based SCD therapy, and gene therapy. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health/the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Health Resources & Services Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and works closely with national partners, including the American Society of Hematology, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health, on advocacy and research. She also works with industry and federal partners to develop new treatments for SCD. 

Dr Kanter has authored and coauthored more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts. She hopes to train upcoming physicians and providers in SCD to expand the workforce for treating affected individuals.
