Terry Gernsheimer is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and an Adjunct Professor in Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and Medical Director of Transfusion at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, USA. She is a leading educator in hematology, hemostasis and thrombosis, and transfusion medicine. Dr Gernsheimer earned her medical degree at the State University of New York and trained in internal medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, USA. Subsequently, she completed her fellowship in hematology at the University of Washington. Dr Gernsheimer’s research interests include the pathophysiology and treatment of immune platelet disorders, and platelet transfusion management of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and acute leukemia. The recipient of several teaching awards, Dr Gernsheimer has given invited lectures nationally and internationally in the field of hematology to professional organizations and academic institutions. She serves on the Executive Committee of the American Society of Hematology and as a Medical Advisor to the Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders and the Platelet Disorder Support Association. Dr Gernsheimer has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters on immune thrombocytopenia and transfusion management.
