Amaal J. Starling, MD, FAAN, FAHS, is an associate professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She joined Mayo in 2012 and is currently a board-certified consultant within the Department of Neurology. She is also presently program director for the Headache Fellowship and the Transitional Year Residency Program at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Arizona.
Dr Starling received her MD from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. She completed a transitional year residency, a neurology residency, and a headache fellowship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Scottsdale, AZ. She was also external chief resident for the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic, AZ.
She is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Headache Society (AHS). She is active in both organizations. In addition, Dr Starling has served as cochair of the American Headache and Migraine Association and chair of the New Investigators and Trainees Special Interest Section of the AHS. She has been an invited speaker to many international, national, and regional meetings, and she has been a perennial speaker at the AHS Scottsdale Headache Symposium.
Dr Starling’s numerous awards and honors include the 2016 AHS Above and Beyond Award, the 2011 Manfred D. Muenter Award for Excellence in Clinical Neurology, the 2012 AAN Annual Meeting Residency Scholarship, the 2012 Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award, and the 2012 Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship Award. Her most recent accolades include the Women Leading in Neurology recognition from the AAN in 2023, the 2023 Miles for Migraine Super Supporter Award, and the 2022 Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science Outstanding Emerging Educator Award.
She has more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts related to her fields of interest, which include migraine, concussion, posttraumatic headache, telemedicine, and graduate medical education. Dr Starling is an active participant in and a member of several educational and departmental committees within Mayo Clinic.
