David Alain Wohl, MD, is a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and its Institute of Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID). He is also co–principal investigator of the UNC IGHID Clinical Trials Unit and site leader of its Chapel Hill research site. He also has an active clinical practice at the UNC Infectious Diseases Clinic and is an attending physician for the inpatient internal medicine and infectious disease consult services.
Dr Wohl is a clinical scientist with a focus on emerging infectious diseases. He has spent more than 25 years leading research on the prevention and treatment of HIV, and he has served 2 terms as a member of the US Department of Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents.
Since 2014, he has been working continuously in Liberia, West Africa, conducting research with Ebola survivors to learn about the chronic complications and sexual transmission of this infection and establishing the UNC IGHID Project-Liberia research platform with his colleague, William A. Fischer 2nd, MD, at 2 locations in the country. Dr Wohl and his team have extended this work to examine Lassa fever, a high-priority viral hemorrhagic fever endemic in West Africa.
In 2020, he was actively involved in UNC’s clinical and research response to COVID-19. Dr Wohl designed and served as medical director of the UNC at Chapel Hill drive-thru testing site, 2 mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics, and the Chapel Hill COVID-19 Monoclonal Antibody Infusion Center. He served as a cochair of ACTIV-2, an Operation Warp Speed international platform trial of promising SARS-CoV-2 therapeutics. His clinical COVID-19 activities led to his being named “Tar Heel of the Month” by the Raleigh News & Observer in November 2020.
In 2023, UNC was selected by the US Department of Health and Human Services to establish the UNC Special Pathogens Response Center, a Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Center, 1 of only 13 in the country. These centers are tasked with rapidly and safely caring for patients with serious and highly transmissible infections. Dr Wohl codirects this center with Dr Fischer.
