JoAnn V. Pinkerton, MD, is the Mamie A. Jessup Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and division director of the Midlife Health Center, University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville.
Dr Pinkerton is a longtime fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and past president of the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She also previously served as executive director and president of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS; currently known as The Menopause Society) from 2015 to 2019 and from 2008 to 2009, respectively, and is a certified menopause specialist through The Menopause Society. Moreover, she has served on several committees for NAMS, the Endocrine Society, and ACOG and was on the 2024 International Menopause Society (IMS) Scientific Committee.
Dr Pinkerton has chaired, cochaired, or collaborated on multiple national and international position statements and guidelines, including the 2015 Endocrine Society guidelines on hormone therapy, the 2017 and 2022 NAMS position statements on hormone therapy, the 2021 NAMS position statement on osteoporosis, the 2022 ACOG guidelines on osteoporosis, the 2025 European Society of Endocrinology guidelines on menopause and perimenopause, and the 2025 IMS global menopause recommendations.
She serves as an associate editor for Menopause (the journal of The Menopause Society) and Climacteric (the journal of the IMS) and is the section editor for menopause for the Journal of Women’s Health. Additionally, she serves on the editorial boards for Menopause, Climacteric, and Contemporary OB/GYN.
Dr Pinkerton has more than 170 peer-reviewed publications, 30 invited papers, and 18 invited chapters, and she has served as principal investigator for more than 30 clinical trials. Her research, clinical care, and lectures focus on keeping women healthy as they age, including the treatment of hot flashes with hormonal and nonhormonal therapies. She was the US national lead and principal investigator for the phase 3 OASIS 2 clinical trial, which investigated the safety and efficacy of a dual NK-1 and NK-3 receptor antagonist for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women. Dr Pinkerton is also a writer for professional and consumer sites.
Finally, she is the creator and force behind the Midlife Health Center and the Midlife Community Educational Symposia. Additionally, Dr Pinkerton was the key speaker for the 2022 Midlife Health Center webinar titled “Thriving Over Forty & Beyond: Women’s Midlife Health and Well-Being,” which had 2000 registrants and 1400 participants, and she is currently cochair of the 2026 Menopause is Thriving at UVA conference.
