John J. Oppenheimer, MD, is a clinical professor of medicine at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He was director of clinical research at Pulmonary and Allergy Associates for several decades.


Dr Oppenheimer is board certified in internal medicine and allergy and immunology. He trained and was on faculty at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine (currently known as National Jewish Health) in Denver, CO.


He has focused his career on guideline development and has been actively involved in measurement development in the field of allergy and immunology. He has participated in more than 100 clinical studies and has more than 250 publications. He currently serves as the executive editor of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, was the co–section editor of Current Allergy & Asthma Reports and Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and serves as a reviewer for several journals, including The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and JAMA.


Dr Oppenheimer is past chairman of the Asthma Diagnosis and Treatment Interest Section and the Interest Section Coordinating Committee for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, served on the Allergy Immunology Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters, and served on the Writing Committee of the Cough Guidelines Committee for the American College of Chest Physicians. He was a voting member of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement and a member of its Atopic Dermatitis Measures Development Panel, was on the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) Board of Directors from 2010 to 2015, is past chairman of the ABAI, is past liaison to the American Board of Internal Medicine for the ABAI, and is a past member of the American Board of Internal Medicine Council.
