John K. Chan, MD, is the division director of gynecologic oncology and the Denise & Prentis Cobb Hale Endowed Chair at Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center. He also serves as lead principal investigator for the Sutter Cancer Research Consortium. Additionally, Dr Chan holds adjunct clinical professor positions at Stanford University; the University of California, San Francisco; and the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine.


Dr Chan earned his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, completed his fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at the University of California, Irvine, and completed the Felix Rutledge fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.


Over his career, he has led numerous gynecologic cancer clinical trials and has received grants and awards from prestigious organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, and the Gynecologic Oncology Group.


Dr Chan has authored or coauthored more than 220 peer-reviewed publications in renowned journals that include The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Gynecologic Oncology. Furthermore, he is the coauthor of 3 textbooks in gynecologic oncology.


Academically, Dr Chan has been recognized with multiple outstanding teaching awards for his contributions to medical student and resident education at Stanford University and the University of California School of Medicine. Clinically, he has been consistently honored with "best doctor" awards by U.S. News & World Report, Castle Connolly Medical, and San Francisco magazine.
