Jonathan A. Bernstein, MD, is an adjunct professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology, Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is also a partner of Advanced Allergy Services and Bernstein Clinical Research Center, LLC.
He received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (1981-1985), completed his residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital (1985–1988), and received his allergy/clinical immunology training at Northwestern University (1988–1990). He has been a faculty member of the University of Cincinnati since 1990.
Dr Bernstein is a Drug Information Association–certified clinical trial investigator and conducts multicenter and physician-initiated clinical therapeutic trials for a number of clinical conditions, including asthma, chronic urticaria, hereditary angioedema, atopic dermatitis, and systemic mastocytosis, and he is considered a key opinion leader in these areas.
He is currently the author or coauthor of more than 500 scientific articles and 5 books pertaining to asthma, rhinitis, and immunodeficiency. He served as the editor in chief of the Journal of Asthma from 2009 to 2022 and is currently on the editorial boards for The Journal of Allergy Clinical Immunology, The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, and Allergy & Asthma Proceedings.
Dr Bernstein is actively involved with the University of Cincinnati Allergy/Immunology Fellowship Training Program in the education of fellows, and he also teaches residents and medical students. He is director or codirector of several centers of excellence in Cincinnati, including the World Allergy Organization (WAO) Centers of Excellence, the American Initiative in Mast Cell Diseases, the Urticaria Centers of Reference and Excellence, the Angioedema Centers of Reference and Excellence, the Atopic Dermatitis Centers of Reference and Excellence, and the Anaphylaxis Centers of Reference and Excellence.
He served as president of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) from 2022 to 2023. He is a member of the AAAAI Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters, the WAO Board of Directors, the Global Initiative for Asthma Advocacy Council, and the Hereditary Angioedema Association Medical Advisory Board. He is also president of Global Asthma Association (GAA)–INTERASMA, a founding board member of the We CU patient advocacy organization, and a member of the University of Cincinnati Alpha Omega Alpha chapter.
Dr Bernstein is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Distinguished Clinician Award from the AAAAI and the WAO. He has been voted “Best Doctor” in Cincinnati from 1999 to 2025 by Cincinnati Magazine and has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as being in the top 1% of doctors in his specialty.
