Joseph Mikhael, MD, MEd, FRCPC, FACP, FASCO, is a professor in the Clinical Genomics and Therapeutics Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), an affiliate of the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also director of myeloma research at the HonorHealth Research Institute and treasurer of the American Society of Hematology Executive Committee.
Dr Mikhael specializes clinically in plasma cell disorders, namely multiple myeloma (MM), amyloidosis, and Waldenström macroglobulinemia. He is the principal investigator for many clinical trials, primarily in relapsed MM, and his other clinical research interests include pharmacoeconomics, communication skills, and media relations. Dr Mikhael has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in these fields, and he lectures internationally on a regular basis. He is also heavily involved in training future researchers, and he mentors junior faculty worldwide.
He is deeply committed to health disparities in MM and leads the diversity efforts of the International Myeloma Foundation, namely the M-Power Project in the African American community. Dr Mikhael is also chair of the TGen Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. Finally, he spends nearly 20% of his time in the third world, developing collaborations in MM and finding ways to enhance access to novel agents.
