Kenneth Kalunian, MD, is a professor of medicine and rheumatology at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) School of Medicine, where he also serves as the Wolfe Family Director of the UC San Diego Lupus Center of Excellence, which focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to patients with lupus as well as clinical science and translational research issues. Dr Kalunian is vice chief of clinical research for the Division of Rheumatology, Autoimmunity, and Inflammation and associate director of the UC San Diego Center for Innovative Therapy.


Dr Kalunian cofounded the Lupus Research Alliance/Lupus Therapeutics Lupus Clinical Investigators Network for the conduct of multicenter clinical trials with 81 participating North American lupologists from 81 academic centers. With the aim of including patients from nonacademic sites primarily at remote areas, Dr Kalunian also cofounded Bento Biology Platforms, a decentralized approach to including patients from rural sites into lupus clinical trials.
