Michael D. Shapiro, DO, MCR, is the Fred M. Parrish Professor of Cardiology and Molecular Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, where he serves on the faculty in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. He also currently serves as director of the Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and as codirector of the National Institutes of Health T32 Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention Fellowship Program.
After completing his cardiology fellowship, Dr Shapiro pursued 2 additional years of advanced clinical and research training in cardiovascular imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since then, his career has been devoted to the study of lipids, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease prevention.
Dr Shapiro has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and several foundations. His research spans translational science, cardiovascular epidemiology, and clinical trials of innovative lipid-modulating therapies. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of lipids, subclinical atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease prevention, with an extensive portfolio of publications in these areas. Dr Shapiro’s broad body of work in these domains and related therapeutic interventions has established him as a leader in the field.
In addition to his research, he holds numerous leadership roles in large international clinical trials and professional societies. He currently serves as immediate past president of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and is current chair of the Councils on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology and Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Clinical Lipidology, Lipoprotein, Metabolism and Thrombosis Committee for the American Heart Association.
Alongside his clinical and research activities, Dr Shapiro is highly regarded for his commitment to mentorship. He has played a pivotal role in guiding the careers of cardiology fellows, medical residents, and students, many of whom have gone on to achieve significant academic and clinical success.
