Nitin Jain, MD, is a professor in the Division of Cancer Medicine, Department of Leukemia, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Since 2021, he has served as director of the Leukemia CAR-T Program within the Department of Leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center. In 2002, Dr Jain earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by a clinical fellowship in leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center and a leukemia research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He then pursued a fellowship in hematology/oncology at The University of Chicago. He joined the Department of Leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center as a faculty member in July 2012.
Dr Jain treats patients with acute and chronic leukemias, with focus of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). His research interests focus on new drug development for patients with leukemia, especially CLL and ALL. He is principal investigator of several investigator-initiated phase 1 to 2 clinical trials, including those examining combination targeted therapies (ibrutinib and venetoclax) in CLL, checkpoint inhibitor therapy in Richter transformation, the JAK2 inhibitor ruxolitinib in Ph-like ALL, novel CD22 ADC therapy in B-cell ALL, venetoclax plus chemotherapy in B-cell and T-cell ALL, ponatinib in T-cell ALL, and off-the-self allogeneic CAR T cells in B-cell ALL. The trial combining ibrutinib and venetoclax was published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2019. Dr Jain has published papers in several prominent journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer, Leukemia & Lymphoma, and others.
He has received many awards throughout his career, including a Sardari Lal Kalra Gold Medal in Microbiology from AIIMS in 1999, a Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in 2008, a High-Impact Clinical Research Support Program Award from MD Anderson Cancer Center in both 2014 and 2016, an MD Anderson Cancer Center Faculty Scholar Award in 2020, a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Career Development Program Award in 2022, and an LLS Translational Research Program Award in 2022. Additionally, he was named an Andrew Sabin Family Foundation Fellow in 2018. Dr Jain secured first rank at the national level in India in the medical school (ie, AIIMS) entrance examination, and he has served as faculty on the American Society of Hematology Clinical Research Training Institute workshop from 2017 to 2019.
