Phuoc T. Tran, MD, PhD

Phuoc T. Tran, MD, PhD, is a professor and chair of genitourinary radiation oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr Tran received his MD and PhD from Oregon Health & Science University, and he completed his radiation oncology residency and postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. His training focused on DNA repair, cancer biology, and transgenic mouse models.

He is a board-certified radiation oncologist who clinically specializes in the treatment of genitourinary malignancies. Dr Tran’s laboratory research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, and foundations and focuses on tumor cell epithelial plasticity programs, novel agents to enhance the local and systemic effects of radiation, and the oligometastatic state, all to improve the outcomes of patients with cancer. Dr Tran is a multi–principal investigator for the National Cancer Institute–funded U54 Radiation Oncology-Biology Integration Network Oligometastasis (ROBIN OligoMET) Center and leads an active clinical trials program that includes interventional and translational investigator–initiated studies.

Dr Tran is chair of the NRG Oncology Translational Science Genitourinary Cancer Working Group and holds leadership positions with the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has received numerous awards for his research and clinical work from the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the Sidney Kimmel Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Uniting Against Lung Cancer, the American Lung Association, the Movember Foundation, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Dr Tran was voted a “top doctor” in Baltimore magazine. He also serves as senior editor for Cancer Research.
