Rami S. Komrokji, MD, is vice chair of the Department of Malignant Hematology and a senior member of the Malignant Hematology and Experimental Therapeutics Program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. He is also a professor of medicine and oncologic sciences at the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine, also in Tampa.
After earning his medical degree in 1996 from the Jordan University School of Medicine, Dr Komrokji completed an internship and residency at Case Western University, St. Vincent Program. He then completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester.
Dr Komrokji is an expert in myeloid neoplasms and has led several clinical trials. His work paved the way for the US Food and Drug Administration approvals of luspatercept and imetelstat for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and pacritinib for myelofibrosis. His research interests are in phase 1/2 clinical trials and in outcomes research in hematologic malignancies with a focus on myeloid neoplasms. Dr Komrokji’s clinical interests are focused on MDS, acute myeloid leukemias, and myeloproliferative neoplasms.
He has authored or coauthored more than 420 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 20 book chapters, and more than 1000 abstracts in hematologic malignancies. Dr Komrokji has served as member of the MDS Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and is currently a member of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute MDS Natural History Study Steering Committee and the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation Medical Advisory Board. He is also member of the Society of Hematology Oncology Steering Committee and MDS Committee.
Dr Komrokji was member of the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is peer reviewer for several medical journals, including Blood, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Leukemia. He has also lectured worldwide and is a regularly invited speaker and chair at national and international meetings. Dr Komrokji has won several awards in recognition of his work, namely the King Hussein Cancer Foundation inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2020 MPN Heroes Award.
