Rana R. McKay, MD, FASCO

Rana R. McKay, MD, FASCO, is a professor of medicine, urology, and radiation medicine at the University of California, San Diego. She is also associate director of clinical sciences and coleader of the Genitourinary Oncology Program at the Moores Cancer Center.

Dr McKay earned her medical degree at the University of Florida College of Medicine and subsequently completed her residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins University. She completed a fellowship in oncology/hematology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School.

She is a medical oncologist who specializes in treating people with urogenital cancers. Dr McKay’s research interests include advanced therapeutics, precision medicine, and biomarker development. She serves as principal investigator for multiple investigator-initiated clinical trials and National Cancer Institute (NCI)–sponsored studies. Her research is supported through multiple funding mechanisms, including the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, and foundation grants from the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Kidney Cancer Association, Kure It Cancer Research, and Curebound, among others. Dr McKay’s work has appeared in peer-reviewed publications such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, and Cancer, in addition to others.

Dr McKay is a member of the NCI Renal Task Force and the NCI Prostate Cancer Task Force; is co–vice chair of the NRG Oncology Genitourinary Cancer Committee; and serves on the American Society of Clinical Oncology Nominating Committee, as the NRG Oncology Renal Cell Carcinoma cadre leader, as the Alliance Advanced Prostate Cancer cadre leader, and as a former member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Prostate Cancer Guidelines Panel. Dr McKay has been named a top doctor in San Diego and recognized by Newsweek as one of “America’s Best Prostate Cancer Oncologists.” She was also selected as the 2024 Woman Oncologist of the Year by LEAD and is a KidneyCAN Catalyst Award recipient.
