Rishi P. Singh, MD, FASRS, is chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mass General Brigham, overseeing ophthalmology across Mass Eye and Ear, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and affiliated sites. He is also chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr Singh earned his undergraduate degree in medical science (summa cum laude) and his medical degree from Boston University. After an internship at Tufts University School of Medicine/New England Medical Center, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Mass Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School and a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute.
Previously, Dr Singh served as vice president and chief medical officer at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health in Stuart, FL, and as a staff physician and surgeon at Cleveland Clinic, where he was a professor of ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
A vitreoretinal surgeon and clinician-scientist, Dr Singh specializes in complex retinal disease, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinal detachment. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, books, and book chapters and has served as principal investigator for numerous national and international clinical trials. Dr Singh’s work spans therapeutic development, real-world evidence, imaging biomarkers, and strategies to improve the durability and delivery of retinal care.
He is the founder and president emeritus of the Retina World Congress and chairs major continuing medical education programs in retina, ophthalmic artificial intelligence, and real-world data. He is an associate editor of Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina and has served on national professional committees and review panels. Dr Singh’s leadership in clinical informatics has included enterprise implementation of ophthalmology-specific Epic workflows, digital informed consent, patient-facing kiosks, and imaging technologies. Additionally, through the Center for Ophthalmic Bioinformatics at Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, he has advanced the use of large-scale clinical data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve the understanding and treatment of retinal disease.
Dr Singh’s awards and honors include the Alpha Omega Alpha Research Award, the American Society of Retina Specialists Presidents’ Young Investigator Award, the J. Donald Gass Beacon of Sight Award, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology John R. Brayton, Jr., MD, Leadership Award.
