Anthony Cheng, MD, MBA

Anthony Cheng, MD, MBA, serves as medical director in the Office of Care Transformation and Innovation at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), where he helps lead the institution’s digital health strategy. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine. His current positions enable him to pursue his passion for digital health transformation, product development, and leading primary care responses to public health challenges, with a focus on equity. As a boundary spanner, he bridges clinical expertise with business acumen to advance health care innovation.

Dr Cheng studied molecular biology as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania. He then attended the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he received his doctor of medicine degree. Following his medical education, he relocated to the Pacific Northwest to complete his residency, serving as chief resident and academic fellow in family medicine at OHSU. Dr Cheng subsequently served as associate residency director at OHSU. To further align his clinical leadership with executive strategy, he recently earned his master of business administration degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School in 2026.

He has made significant contributions to pandemic response, primary care innovation, and digital health. At the onset of the public health crisis, Dr Cheng led OHSU’s COVID-19 Connected Care Center hotline, overseeing a team of 36 nurses who managed more than 300,000 patient contacts for triage, results, and treatment coordination. As medical director for the Oregon Health Authority from 2020 to 2023, he led a statewide team delivering COVID-19 testing and vaccinations to vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness and migrant farm workers. Dr Cheng has played a pivotal role in scaling telehealth at OHSU, guiding the implementation of virtual visits and an electronic consultation (eConsult) program, with virtual care now comprising 25% of OHSU’s ambulatory clinic care.

Recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians with a Boundary Breakers Award, Dr Cheng has also developed innovative community engagement strategies and has designed and facilitated continuing medical education courses for the Oregon Echo Network on topics that include long COVID and infectious diseases.

He has published 38 manuscripts, peer-reviewed abstracts, and book chapters. Notably, he served as an editor for the 2026 book Primary Care in a Public Health Emergency, and he has authored American Academy of Family Physicians evidence reviews on the outpatient management of COVID-19 and long COVID. Dr Cheng’s work in medical innovation and digital health has been featured in leading media outlets, including The New York Times and STAT News.
