Ellie Kelepouris, MD, FACP, FAHA, is an attending nephrologist and professor of clinical medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Heart Association. In addition, she is currently director of Outpatient Dialysis Services at the University of Pennsylvania and the chair-elect of the Medical Faculty Senate Steering Committee of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.


She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society at Drexel University in 2012. She was previously the chief of nephrology, the fellowship training program director, and the chair of the Department of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine (2008-2020).


Dr Kelepouris is a nationally recognized leader in the field of nephrology. She is principal investigator for numerous clinical studies in nephrology. Her prolific list of publications includes many original research papers, reviews, and abstracts, as well as book chapters in nephrology. Dr Kelepouris also serves as a reviewer for several journals, including The Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, and the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. She is currently the section editor for Acid Base and Electrolytes for UpToDate.


She served as chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation/Delaware Valley for 15 years, as well as the Leadership Committee of the American Heart Association’s National Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease. As a strong patient advocate, she spearheaded many community engagement and kidney health screening programs in Philadelphia. For these efforts, she was honored by the National Kidney Foundation as Outstanding Physician of the Year 2020 and 2022.


In addition, she is actively involved in many professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, and the American Society of Nephrology. Dr Kelepouris is also the recipient of numerous awards in medicine and teaching, including the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Outstanding Physician of the Year and the Outstanding Leadership Award from the National Kidney Foundation, and the Teaching and Mentoring Award from Drexel University College of Medicine. In 2018, Dr Kelepouris was elected to a 3-year term as president of Women in Nephrology, a mentoring and leadership society for young professionals in the nephrology field.
