Sergio A. Giralt, MD, is deputy division head, Division of Hematologic Malignancies, and Melvin Berlin family chair in multiple myeloma at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY. He is a board-certified hematologist-oncologist who, prior to joining Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, trained and worked at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr Giralt, an expert in the treatment of multiple myeloma, has focused his research on improving treatments for older patients with acute and chronic leukemia and developing new conditioning regimens for autologous transplant and strategies that will reduce symptom burden, making the treatment more tolerable. Along with his colleagues, he pioneered the use of reduced-intensity conditioning regimens for older or more debilitated patients with blood cancers, which has enabled older patients to receive transplants in a safe and effective manner and has changed the standard of care worldwide.
He has published extensively and has been the principal investigator or co-principal investigator for several studies on multiple myeloma, autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation, and myeloid leukemias. Dr Giralt has been included in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in New York Magazine from 2016 to 2020.
