Daniel R. Couriel, MD, MS, is currently a professor of medicine, medical director of the Center for Cellular Therapy and Regenerative Medicine, and director of the Utah Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program, Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies, Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City. He received his MD degree in 1987 from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina. After completing his fellowship training at Tufts University, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and Johns Hopkins University, he was appointed as assistant professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1999, Dr Couriel moved to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He was promoted to associate professor in 2005, and, in 2010, he relocated to the University of Michigan, where he was appointed as director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and promoted to full professor.
Dr Couriel has a history of consistent funding and has more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. His research interests are associated with new treatments for acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease.
He is currently serving on the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Board of Directors and the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy Board of Directors. In addition, Dr Couriel cochaired the GVHD Subcommittee for the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research and the Ancillary Therapy and Supportive Care Working Group of the NIH Chronic GVHD Consensus Project. He also serves on the editorial board of the journal Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (formerly Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation).
